About the Event
Given the unique characteristics and disparities that individuals face within the LGBTQIA2S+ community, it is essential that we continue to expand queer-specific resources and be more accommodating in all recovery spaces.
Rutland County Pride is now hosting All Recovery Meetings! These meetings are for everyone who supports recovery. They honor all pathways to recovery, acknowledging that each person’s path is unique and reflects their personal strengths. The meetings are non-denominational and offer an opportunity to focus on the hope found in recovery. Recovery does not happen alone. Join us and connect with others who are initiating and maintaining a recovery lifestyle.
All Recovery Meetings are facilitated by trained and certified Peer Recovery Specialists in partnership with The Turning Point Center of Rutland and provide social support for those seeking or maintaining recovery, as well as family members, friends and supporters of those who have been influenced by substance use.
In an effort to preserve the recovery communities we've built together and continue to provide a place of hope and safety during these challenging times.
Why LGBTQIA2S+ specific All Recovery Meetings????
According to the National Institute of Drug Abuse and the Recovery Research Institute:
- Gay, lesbian, and bisexual individuals are 18% more likely to have alcohol use disorder and 20% more likely to have substance use disorder.
- 77 % of lesbian/gay/bisexual people and 57% transgender people have access to healthcare.
- LGBTQ+ individuals are more likely to start drinking earlier and they have a greater likelihood of experiencing substance use disorder in their lifetime.
- Transgender youth experience higher levels of depression, suicidality, self-harm, and eating disorders.
- There is a higher risk of co-occurring mental disorders such as depression, and higher chances of poor physical health, activity limitations, chronic conditions, obesity, smoking, and binge drinking in the LGBTQ+ community due to their adverse experiences and healthcare status.
- People with co-occurring disorders are at a higher risk of fatal opioid overdose: this is 3 times higher for those with depression and six times higher for those with serious mental illness.
- Gay men are three times more likely as straight men to have an eating disorder, and lesbian and bisexual women are twice as likely as straight women to suffer with binge eating.
